cybercrimes
In light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that has swept across the globe, particularly in the twenty-first century, we can clearly observe the level reached by technologies produced by brilliant human minds. These technologies are characterized by positive aspects that save time and effort; however, they also have negative aspects, the most important of which is exposure to cybercrimes. Their use in causing severe harm to individuals, institutions, or even states demonstrates the extent of the negative impact of this industrial revolution.
Concept of Cybercrimes (Information Crimes):
Cybercrime is an act that causes serious harm to individuals, groups, or institutions, with the aim of blackmailing the victim, damaging their reputation, or achieving financial gain or political objectives, using computers and modern communication means such as the internet.
Thus, cybercrimes aim to steal information and use it to cause severe psychological and material harm to the victim, or to disclose important security secrets related to major state institutions, or private data and accounts belonging to banks and individuals.
Cybercrime is similar to traditional crime in its elements in terms of the presence of a perpetrator, a victim, and a criminal act. However, it differs from traditional crime in terms of environment and means used. Cybercrime can be committed without the offender being physically present at the scene, and the tools used are modern technology, communication devices, and information networks.
Types of Cybercrimes:
1) Crimes causing harm to individuals:
Such as identity theft, defamation, and threats against individuals.
2) Crimes causing harm to institutions:
Such as hacking systems, taking control of them, or destroying them and causing major damage.
3) Financial crimes:
Such as stealing bank accounts and violating property and intellectual property rights.
4) Crimes targeting state security:
Such as espionage against states and the use of terrorist methods to create misinformation and deception.
