In legal terminology, law is defined as a set of mandatory and procedural rules aimed at regulating and managing the affairs of societies, with penalties imposed in case of violation.
Law is a system of principles and rules that govern society and regulate it. A society cannot function successfully if its members are not subject to laws that regulate their behavior, allowing them to act freely without regard for their duties and rights. Law establishes the rules that define individuals’ rights and obligations and sets appropriate penalties for violating those rules. These penalties are enforced by the government.
Legal rules are constantly changing in accordance with the developments and transformations that occur in society. In democratic societies, laws include mechanisms for amending unjust legislation, since justice is one of the fundamental principles of law.
Linguistically, the word “law” originates from the Greek word “Kanun”, meaning a straight rod, and it was used to indicate straightness and order. It then passed from Greek into Persian with the same term “Kanun,” meaning the origin of something or its measure. Later, it was Arabized, taking one of two meanings: either origin or straightness.
In legal terminology, law is defined as: “a general rule that applies to all its individual cases, whose rulings are derived from it.”
